The Pre Prep Department occupies Cedars House which is adjacent to our woodland playground and the extensive playing fields.
With its dedicated ICT suite, classrooms, library and a multi-purpose activity room, a broad and balanced curriculum is offered for all pupils with specialist teachers for extra-curricular subjects.
From Nursery to Year 2, children enjoy Forest School, Spanish, Music, Drama and a full programme of Physical Education including weekly swimming in our modern 25m indoor pool. Children are encouraged to work and play both independently and in groups. Self-confidence is promoted and imagination is stimulated with enrichment days and by teaching thematically, with a different topic each term. Personal and social skills are honed in a friendly, positive and caring atmosphere, strengthening confidence and self-esteem.
Here is a case study of one of our Year 1 pupils who explains in her own words what she likes about Westonbirt.
Starting school is an exciting time for your child and Westonbirt provides children with a safe, secure and stimulating start to their full school days. Classes are small and each classroom teacher is assisted by a full time Teaching Assistant. Our classrooms are bright and spacious with a dedicated outside play area including bespoke play equipment including tricycles, a play house, sand pit and raised flower and vegetable beds.
In Reception we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the curriculum is based on seven key areas:
A comprehensive induction programme in the summer term ensures that children quickly settle into school life in September.
Years 1 and 2
Progressing from Reception, the exceptional quality of teaching and supportive environment helps ensure a seamless transition towards more formal learning while still allowing for a ‘child-initiated’ classroom style with access to educational toys and role play opportunities. Pupils are introduced to an increasing range of subjects and they are encouraged to employ new techniques such as using their initiative, problem solving and ‘thinking outside the box’ alongside practical and fun activities to provoke curiosity and a love of learning. Year 2 acts as a springboard into the Prep Department/Key Stage 2 phase of school and further developing positive can-do attitudes and sound values.
